Most would agree with the statement that right wing extremism posed a significant threat to the Weimar Republic in the years 1919 to 1923. To sign the Treaty of Versailles peace treaty, Germany rapidly and forcefully switched from a monarchy to a new democratic governing system under the recommendation of Wilson's 14 points. The instability of the new system fuelled resentment from the conservative right. For an event to be considered a "significant threat", it should be long-term, damaging to the German people's livelihoods, and threatening to the power of Weimar Republic. Right wing extremism includes the Munich Putsch, the Kapp Putsch and political assassinations, which will be discussed in this essay.

Adolf Hitler's Munich Putsch in 1923 marked the first radical movement of him, his Stormtroopers (SA, or the Brownshirts), and his NSDAP. Hitler raided a meeting of a Bavarian party in 1923, held two Bavarian political leaders at gunpoint inside a side-room and threaten them to support the NSDAP's cause. After receiving their support Hitler made the grave mistake of releasing them, marching into Berlin. He and his members were stopped by police and army forces, breaking into a fight and 16 Nazis were killed, Hitler was also sent to jail and the Nazi party banned from the Reichstag. Although the Beerhall Putsch was ultimately suppressed, it was backed by the influential General Ludendorff, a right-wing war hero during WW1. His support for a violent uprising from a minor extremist party proves the lack of control the Weimar Republic had over its parties, part of the negatives of having a coalition government. Some could even argue that the Beerhall Putsch and Hitler's time in prison established the foundation for his reign of terror, meeting one of his right-hand man Rudolf Hess, and writing his hateful autobiography Mein Kampft, consolidating his beliefs and ideas for dictatorship.

When Hitler was arrested after the failure of the Munich Putsch, he used the public trial as a stage to announce his ideologies and discriminating notions, and ultimately receiving a minimum 4 years in prison for treason, even released after a short 9 months. This shows the level of corruption and political bias in the unreformed judiciary. After the formation of the Weimar Republic, the justice system and the army remained unreformed, keeping their nationalistic, conservative support. This meant that right-wing rebellions, such as Hitler's, were treated lightly compared to left-wing uprisings, such as the Spartacist Uprising in 1919, where both leaders Luxemburg and Liebknecht were executed by Freikorp units. This poses a significant threat to the Weimar Republic as it threatens the stability of the government, the lightness of right-wing punishments were as if encouraging more rebellions against the Republic, damaging the people's everyday peace as well as the influences of the Constitution.

Furthermore, the Kapp Putsch in 1920 led by Wolfgang Kapp posed a considerable amount of damage to the influence of the establishment. The Kapp Putsch was triggered when the Chancellor ordered the dissolution of a Freikorp unit, and Kapp refused, instead marching to and occupying the capital Berlin. The imperial army refused to help the Republic to put down the Putsch, famously saying "troops do not fire on troops". The government retreated to Dresdon and started a strike campaign for Berliners to stop the Putsch. Although the Putsch was ultimately stopped after 4 days of general strike by the public, the uprising was damaging in the sense that in completely humiliated the Weimar Republic. The mere act of retreating to Dresdon highlights the government's weakness, and the powerlessness of the Republic with no army backing undermines and questions the power and influence of government has without military support.

In conclusion, right wing extremism did pose a significant threat to the Weimar Republic in the years 1919 to 1923, through methods such as violent putsches and exploiting the unreformed, biased judiciary system in order to spread their radical conservative ideologies and overthrow the Republic.
