How does Dickens present Scrooge’s transformation/redemption in A Christmas Carol?

Dickens presents redemption and transformation as a key theme to follow using Scrooge. Dickens wrote this to promote awareness of kindness and affection that will reward you in the afterlife and the consequences of inequalities and cruelness.

In the beginning Scrooge is presented as an unemphathetic miserable misanthropist who did not care about the poor and less fortunate. This is evident when he says they should die and “decrease the surplus population”. The inhumane language being used suggests that the poor had no use in society and weren’t considered humans, showing how callous Scrooge was. Dickens believed everyone should be treated equally no matter what class and that the poor should not be segregated from the rich.

In the middle Scrooge is visited by Jacob Marley who help initiate Scrooge’s change when he says he “wears the chains” he “forged”. Suggests that his selfish actions made him gain sins which he has to carry eternally. The word “forged” shows that his own actions caused his fate in his afterlife. He acts as a messenger to Scrooge warning that if Scrooge doesn’t change his way of life he will end up like him.

By the end after all of the ghosts appearances he undergoes rebirth releasing his emotions which were trapped inside his heart. This is shown when he describes himself as being “as light as a feather” showing all the weight of sorrow and cruelty being replaced by buoyant and joyful emotions showing that even the most miserable person could change. Dickens wrote this novella as a moral message to encourage social change.
