Moreover, the use of the adjective ‘golden’ suggests Mr Fisher values stories of the past in the same way as he values money. This connotes that Mr Fisher views books as precious and luxurious in nature as the writer shows how he equates them to material wealth. In doing this, the writer highlights to the reader how highly Mr Fisher values books and stories of the past as to him they are the equivalent of a fortune with endless virtuous qualities.
Secondly, the writer uses metaphorical language to show the power Mr Fisher believes books and stories of the past hold. This can be seen when the writer describes ‘whole classes swept away in the fever’. Here, the metaphorical use of ‘fever’ shows how Mr Fisher believes they have an all-consuming quality by likening them to illness. This suggests that Mr Fisher views stories as powerful and captivating, having the ability to completely incapacitate an entire person. Moreover, this could suggest Mr Fisher believes they are contagious even, and once you read one you will not be able to stop. This is emphasised by the use of the adjective ‘whole’ signifing the strength Mr Fisher believes stories hold as they can enthral large groups of people, further emphasised by the verb ‘swept’. In doing this, the writer shows how Mr Fisher views books and stories of the past as an unstoppable force with the power to entertain large audiences.
