Shakespeare portrays the supernatural as a dark entity, that only causes harm rather than good. Macbeth puts his belief in the Witches due to their prophecies, this evokes his 'vaulting ambition' as he believes he will become king, due to the fact they told him he would become 'thane of cawdor' which happened to be true later on, this provided him with enough evidence that the prophecies would become true. The witches act as catalysts fueling Macbeths inner desires and tempts him to act on it, "All hail Macbeth' that shalt be king hereafter!", the Witches saying this when they first meet Macbeth lead him intrigued and fascinated by such creatures telling him he will become king, something he desires to become, the witches then vanishing leads him wanting more and heightens tensions for the reader as we are not aware of their powers yet.The ambiguous foreshadowing, leads Macbeth to believe he is destined to be king awakening his desire for hidden power. The exclamation mark conveys a sense of excitement in the Witches, this alludes the confidence they have in Macbeth, causing him to be enticed to the idea of becoming King. This further highlights their manipulative nature of the Witches as they only want to cause chaos and havoc through Macbeth, depicting him as their puppet. This causes fear to the contemporary audience as Witches were seen as a threat, however Shakespeare uses witches as the supernatural to captivate James II as he wrote a book called the daemonologie.

Shakespeare depicts the supernatural as a highly influential,dangerous force that disrupts the natural order of the world, however Lady Macbeth looks past this as she relies on the supernatural as she wants the power they have, hence denying her traditional values, "come you spirits", Lady Macbeth commands the spirits, "come", asserting dominance over them, showing her bravery and courage calling something that's out of her league. This depicts Lady Macbeth as fearless women at the beginning, as she also challenges her husband who had 'unseam'd' Mcdonawald, showing his ruthlessness however she looks past that and mocks him, 'if you were durst a man', this highlights her control however Lady Macbeth wants the supernatural to control her. She can be seen as a dark force, the fourth witch as she is nothing like the Jacobean women which can be seen through her speaking in rhyming couplets and mimics the witches through 'soon to be king', it can also be seen through "unsex me here" this alludes to Lady Macbeth denying her loving, nurturing values and wants them to be replaced with stronger more masculine traits, highlighting her moral corruption. Shakespeare emphasises gender nonconformity is dangerous and that women in the jacobean era were not naturally inclined to commit sins as they were to weak. He uses Lady Macbeth to convey moral lessons about guilt and punishment.
